While "flibbertigibbet" has become slang for a gossip or chatterbox, it originated as a Middle English word for a flighty or whimsical person- usually a young woman- hence its use in the song "Maria" in 
The Sound of Music.

Her parents perceived her as a model student and grounded young woman, but her teachers saw her as a flibbertigibbet who never settled down.
